Level/Session Information

1.  Beginning Level 1 (Papa `Ekahi):  No experience necessary.  This is an introductory level for first time players.  By the end of the level, you should be comfortable with simple chords and simple strumming.
Prerequisites:  None

2.  Beginning Level 2, Section 1 (Papa `Elua):  This is a level for those of you who already know something about playing the `ukulele, but need to get that elbow and wrist moving again!  So dust off your favorite Martin or Kamaka and come join us!  You should be familiar with a handful of chords and with simple strumming.  By the end of the session, you should be playing along with a simple double strum and singing to some of the more slower Hawaiian songs.

3.  Beginning Level 2, Section 2:  This workshop introduces major scales, chord construction/structure and altered chords.

Augment your chord vocabulary!!  Flat your 5th!!  This is no minor event – so I won’t keep you suspendedAdd a 9th, a 6th or a Major 7th to your treasury of chords.  Come to this class so you won’t diminish your chances of improving your `ukulele skills!  This level introduces you to start understanding and playing the fancier sounding chords – all on four strings!  Review your chord structures for a 13th time!!  Hawaiian songs will be used as examples.  We'll cover some basic music theory, such as major scales and keys, as they relate to chord structure and types.
Prerequisites:  #1 or #2 above

4.  Intermediate Level 1 (Papa `Ekolu):  So you've been playing for a while now, but you really want to get into some contemporary Hawaiian sounds?  We'll learn new keys for old favorites, so that you get a broad range of chords to play for Aunty or Uncle's falsetto!  You should be familiar with more chords and at least simple double strum technique.  By the end of the lesson, you'll have learned even more chords and more strumming techniques and we'll start to get into some of the faster paced Hawaiian songs.  We'll review some basic music theory, such as major scales and keys, as they relate to transposing and modulating.

5.  Intermediate Level 2 (Papa `Eha):  This class if for the shaka guys and gals!  This class extends Papa `Ekolu with new repertoires of music and stylings.  We'll get into more strumming techniques.  Students are expected to be familiar with modulating to different keys as in the Papa `Ekolu.

6.  Beginning `Ukulele Fingerpicking Level 1, Section 1:  Learn the basics of fingerstyle picking using standard TAB as applied to the `ukulele.  Music will consist of exercises and arrangements based on traditional Hawaiian melodies.  This level is suitable for those with no prior experience.  For those that can play the basic chords, this level introduces you to a fingerpicking style that can complement your strumming styles.
Prerequisites:  None

7.  Beginning `Ukulele Fingerpicking Level 1, Section 2:  This section will continue where Section 1 left off and will start to introduce the basics of chord melody playing.  All exercises and arrangements are based on traditional Hawaiian melodies.  Standard TAB notation will be provided.

8.  `Ukulele Fingerpicking Level 2:  This level introduces new rhythm patterns and more involved fingerpicking techniques.  Exercises and arrangements will be based on traditional Hawaiian and hapa-haole melodies.  Standard TAB notation will be provided.
Prerequisite:  #7

9.  Introduction to “Playing by Ear”:  I’ll explain what this is and we’ll go through simple examples that are taken very slow so that you can get a feel of recognizing chord types,  progressions and changes.
Prerequisite:  #3

10.  Introduction to Transcribing:  You should be comfortable with reading music and understanding basic rhythm notation.  Exercises and arrangements will be based on traditional Hawaiian and hapa-haole melodies.  You’ll create lead sheets (notation and chords with words) at this level.  Bring one of your favorite (but simple!) traditional Hawaiian songs to transcribe.
Prerequisites:  #9 and the ability to read music on an instrument

11.  Arranging for the ‘Ukulele - Section 1:  This level introduces single note transcribing and arranging using standard rhythm notation and TAB.  Exercises and arrangements will be based on simple traditional Hawaiian and hapa-haole melodies.  Standard rhythm notation will be reviewed and standard TAB notation sheets will be provided.
Prerequisites:  #7 and #10

12.  Arranging for the ‘Ukulele - Section 2:  This level also gets into more involved fingerpicking, chord-melody  transcribing and arranging using standard rhythm notation and TAB.  Exercises and arrangements will be based on traditional Hawaiian and hapa-haole melodies.  Standard TAB notation sheets will be provided.
Prerequisite:  #11 (reading notation on the guitar would be helpful here)

13.  Advanced Fingerpicking and Arranging for the ‘Ukulele :  You’ll need to be able to read standard notation and chords off lead sheets in order to create your own `uke arrangements.
Prerequisites:  All of the above (or equivalent!)

14.  Beginning Kīkā Kī hō`alu (Slack Key Guitar) Level 1, Section 1:  For absolute beginners - learn the basics of fingerstyle picking using standard TAB as applied to the slack key guitar.  Music will consist of exercises and arrangements based on traditional Hawaiian melodies.  Taro patch – G tuning will be introduced here.
Prerequisites:  None

15.  Beginning Kīkā Kī hō`alu (Slack Key Guitar) Level 1, Section 2:  This section is a continuation of Section 1.  Slur (hammer-on and pull-off) techniques will be covered with using traditional songs as exercises.
Prerequisite:  #14

16.  Beginning Classical Guitar:  This level introduces fundamentals of playing the guitar in the classical style.  Reading notes and standard classical guitar fingerpicking techniques are introduced.  Exercises will be based on traditional classical pieces.
Prerequisites:  None

Prerequisites:  Can mean that you’ve got an equivalent amount of music background at this level.

Instructor Fees:
Individual lessons:   $23 / 45 min.
Small groups of 2-5:   $14 / 45 min.

Discounts are given for the individual lessons – for those who take more than one lesson.

All classes require the student to bring a battery powered
tape recorder or battery powered recording device
